Kaps Fungaroo, Fred Bamwine emphasize inclusive development and citizen engagement

Kaps Fungaroo, MP Emeritus, and Fred Bamwine, Commissioner, recently spoke about the importance of inclusive development, citizen participation, and the need for a collaborative approach to address urbanization challenges in Africa.

Hon. Fungaroo highlighted that equal opportunities and development for all must be prioritized. “Laws should apply equally to all, and conditions for development must be inclusive,” he stated. He further stressed the importance of sensitization to ensure that everyone has access to the same resources and opportunities.

Fred Bamwine addressed the political aspects of development, noting that politics and development are closely linked. “The level of politicking and politicizing of government programs is high in our country. You can’t discuss development without considering politics,” he said. Bamwine urged for a more responsive approach to urbanization, citing delays caused by legislative processes and calling for quicker implementation of development plans.

Both leaders pointed to the challenges posed by urbanization, particularly in Africa, where rapid growth has led to the emergence of slums and increasing inequality. Bamwine emphasized that infrastructure development often reflects political power and societal values.

Hon. Fungaroo also called for daily planning and active citizen involvement in shaping development initiatives. “The government should engage citizens in shaping and pursuing the initiatives we care about,” he said, underscoring the need for more collaborative efforts between the government and its people.

The discussion comes as Africa continues to experience rapid urbanization, presenting both challenges and opportunities for sustainable development.
