Banjul launches inner city cleaning initiative with youth volunteers

A new initiative aimed at enhancing the city’s environmental sustainability was launched today as over 100 volunteers gathered for the orientation of the Inner City Cleaning Project, funded by the Bloomberg Youth Climate Action Fund. The initiative is part of a broader vision for Banjul, aimed at fostering cleaner urban spaces and promoting responsible waste management.

During the orientation, the Mayor of Banjul announced the delivery of seven tricycles and various tools to support the volunteers in their efforts to clean the inner city.

“This project is not just about cleaning; it’s about instilling a sense of responsibility among our youth towards their environment,” the Mayor stated. “We believe in their ability to create practical solutions for our city’s challenges.”

The Inner City Cleaning Project will also focus on waste management advocacy, collaborating with other micro-grant recipients dedicated to preserving marine biodiversity, wetlands, and mangrove environments in the area.

“Together with our partners—Bloomberg Philanthropies, Banjul City Council, and REFELA The Gambia—we are committed to empowering our youth to take action for a sustainable future,” said the project lead, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in tackling environmental issues.
