ECOWAS president reflects on 2024 challenges, calls for renewal in Golden Jubilee Year

As the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) prepares to close the chapter on a challenging 2024, the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, has delivered a heartfelt message of reflection, resilience, and renewal.
Addressing colleagues and stakeholders, Touray emphasized the importance of unity, peace, and progress in the face of adversity.
Reflecting on the past year, the president acknowledged the hurdles the region has faced, stating: “2024 tested the resilience of our Community. It was a year marked by considerable challenges, threatening our unity, peace, and stability. Yet, in the face of these trials, our shared commitment to unity, peace, and progress remained unshaken.”
Looking ahead to 2025, which marks the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS, the President expressed optimism for transformation: “We must welcome 2025 with hope, as a year of renewal and transformation for ECOWAS. This new year is particularly significant as it marks the Golden Jubilee, the 50th anniversary of our beloved Community—a Community built on the ideals of peace, prosperity, and unity for our people.”
Touray extended his gratitude to the leadership and staff of ECOWAS institutions for their dedication: “I wish to express my profound gratitude to the leadership and staff of all ECOWAS institutions. Your dedication and continuous efforts have upheld the torch and image of our Community while working for the well-being and aspirations of the populations of our Member States. I wish you and your families a successful, healthy, and joyful 2025.”
Acknowledging the contributions of Member State leaders, he added: “To the leaders of our Member States, we extend our heartfelt thanks for their unwavering commitment to the unity and prosperity of our Community and for the renewed trust they have placed in us.”
The president also lauded the organization’s partners for their steadfast support: “To our valued partners, I express my deep appreciation for your constant support. Together, we have embarked on transformative projects, and I look forward to strengthening our collaboration further in 2025.”
As ECOWAS steps into this landmark year, the President called for solidarity and collective effort: “In this pivotal year, let us draw strength from our unity and solidarity. Together, let us build an ECOWAS synonymous with peace, development, and shared prosperity—a Community that truly belongs to our people.”
