EU bolsters Gambia’s development with 718 million Dalasi allocation

In a significant boost to The Gambia’s state-building efforts, the European Union (EU) has disbursed 718.2 million Dalasi (€9.5 million) under the State and Resilience Building Contract for The Gambia 4.

Africa Parrot correspondent gathered that this gesture marks the second tranche of the EU’s budget support program aimed at enhancing governance, fostering resilience, and ensuring better service delivery to the Gambian population.

The allocation consists of a fixed tranche of €2 million, recognizing progress in public policy, macroeconomic stability, public financial management, and budget transparency. The remaining €7.5 million is a variable tranche tied to The Gambia’s achievements in transitional justice, social protection, and public financial management reforms.

Highlighting the EU’s commitment, Ambassador Immaculada Roca I Cortés said: “The budget support’s goal is to accompany the Gambian Government’s efforts to consolidate a peaceful, inclusive and democratic society in The Gambia, while promoting social protection and gender equality. The objectives cover a wide range of areas that have been defined together with the government. The path in reinforcing a democratic Gambia requires the commitment of all state actors and partners, and we are glad to play our active part which reflects the longstanding European solidarity.”

The programme focuses on key areas such as promoting the rule of law and gender-inclusive transitional justice, improving migration management, expanding social protection for vulnerable groups, and enhancing public financial management for transparent service delivery.

Accompanying the budget support, the EU provides technical assistance in public financial management and social protection, alongside grants to enhance the rights of persons with disabilities in The Gambia.

This latest disbursement follows a €12 million payment in December 2023, with the final tranche of €14.5 million scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to performance conditions. Since 2017, the EU has invested over 10.2 billion Dalasi (€135 million) in The Gambia through its four State and Resilience Building programmes.

While the funds are not earmarked for specific expenses, they support the General Treasury to strengthen state ownership of the national budget. Both parties conduct regular policy dialogues to ensure effective implementation and alignment with agreed objectives.

The EU’s ongoing support underscores its commitment to fostering a peaceful, democratic, and inclusive Gambia, reflecting a partnership built on shared goals and mutual accountability.
