South Africa: 12 pupils, driver die in auto crash

A minibus driver and 12 pupils lost their lives in a harrowing road accident on Wednesday morning in Johannesburg’s Gauteng province, South Africa.

The Gauteng education department confirmed that 11 of the pupils hailed from Rocklands Primary School, while one was from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig in Carletonville. The accident took place when a small pick-up truck reportedly struck the minibus from behind. The impact caused the minibus to overturn and subsequently catch fire, leading to the devastating loss of life. Authorities are currently investigating the precise circumstances surrounding the crash.

Seven other children, who sustained injuries in the accident, were swiftly transported to the hospital for urgent medical care. Their conditions remain a focal point for the community’s concern and prayers.

Television footage from the scene painted a grim picture of the aftermath. The minibus was completely engulfed in flames, leaving it charred and unrecognizable. Scattered across the tarmac were remnants of schoolbooks, their pages burnt and blackened, a poignant reminder of the young lives abruptly cut short. Police and emergency services were seen meticulously examining the site, piecing together the events leading up to the disaster.

Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the Gauteng education department, expressed profound sorrow over the incident. “The council is deeply saddened by this tragic event,” Mabona stated. He assured that the psycho-social support unit has been dispatched to the affected schools to provide the necessary emotional and psychological support to students, staff, and families grappling with the loss.

In an official statement, police confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened. The driver of the pick-up truck involved in the collision is currently receiving medical treatment.
