President Barrow champions Gambian-Turkish trade, calls for industrialization, investment
President Adama Barrow met with members of the Gambian-Turkish Business Council on Friday. The discussions centered around enhancing trade opportunities and attracting Turkish investment to The Gambia.
The council members sought President Barrow’s support to facilitate the export of raw materials and to bring Turkish investors into the country. However, President Barrow emphasized a more holistic approach to industrialization. He advised the council to not only focus on exporting raw materials but to also invest in manufacturing these materials into various products within The Gambia.
“To truly promote industrialization, it is crucial that we move beyond just raw material exportation. We must engage in manufacturing to add value to our exports,” President Barrow urged.
He recommended a collaborative effort with the Ministry of Trade and other key stakeholders to identify and attract potential investors.
Addressing concerns about electricity and market access, President Barrow highlighted the government’s substantial investments in the power sector. He assured that achieving universal electricity access by 2025 is a priority, which presents lucrative opportunities for potential investors.
Fatou Senghore, Chair of the Gambian-Turkish Business Council, expressed gratitude to President Barrow for his support and for considering their proposals. She noted the longstanding friendship and bilateral relations between The Gambia and Türkiye as a solid foundation for future economic collaboration.
The Barrow administration remains committed to making The Gambia an attractive and investor-friendly destination.
By enhancing infrastructure and creating a conducive environment for investments, the government aims to stimulate trade and drive economic growth.
