Rwanda: Kibeho Shrine fundraising efforts fall short, only 8.5% of required target raised for land acquisition

In a significant fundraising initiative for the Virgin Mary Shrine, only 8.5% of the total funds needed to purchase land has been raised, raising concerns among local religious leaders and community members.

The announcement was made during a mass celebration on August 15, 2024, commemorating the Assumption, where it was revealed that approximately 300 million Rwandan Francs have been gathered, while a staggering 3.5 billion Francs is required for the acquisition.

Bishop Celestin Hakizimana addressed the congregation, emphasizing the urgent need for community support to meet the financial goal.

He articulated a hopeful message, urging each baptized Rwandan to contribute at least 1,000 Francs, which he believes would enable them to reach their target in less than two weeks.

“We hope they understand and will respond quickly,” he stated, highlighting the importance of collective action.

The bishop further explained the strategy behind their fundraising efforts, noting that some contributors would be reimbursed to encourage more donations.

“When people see that work has begun, they often worry that their donations are not being used as intended. Therefore, let us contribute our support to complete the project,” he added.

The funds raised are intended to secure 10 hectares of land essential for the expansion of the Virgin Mary Shrine.

This land is strategically located on both sides of the road leading from the Shrine to the Kibeho bus station and the Notre Dame Hotel. The acquisition is seen as vital for accommodating the growing number of pilgrims who visit Kibeho, particularly during recognized holy days.

Bishop Hakizimana reiterated the critical role of the Christian community in this fundraising effort, stating that the purchase of the land would not only facilitate the construction of a larger shrine but also provide a designated resting place for the many visitors who flock to the site.

“Even if construction on the 20 proposed projects is not completed immediately, it will provide a space for pilgrims, ensuring they have a place to rest,” he asserted.

Plans for the shrine’s expansion include a large church with an uncovered section designed to hold up to 100,000 people and a covered area for 10,000. Additionally, provisions for parking to accommodate 300 vehicles will be included.
