Three arrested in Benin over suspected coup plot, officials say investigations continue
Authorities in Benin have taken swift action, arresting three individuals accused of plotting a coup, as the West African nation demonstrates its commitment to upholding stability. Among those arrested are former Sports Minister Oswald Homeky and Elonm Mario Metonou, head of the Republican Guard. They were detained after allegedly conspiring to bribe Colonel Djimon Dieudonne Tevoedjre not to resist the planned coup. A businessman, Olivier Boko, has also been arrested.
The arrests are a testament to Benin’s dedication to maintaining security, as President Patrice Talon has expressed his intent to step down in 2026, marking a peaceful transition of power. Despite concerns about rising political tensions, this development underscores the government’s readiness to take decisive action to safeguard democracy.
