UN Chief, Guterres applauds Gambia’s democratic strides, transitional justice
In a significant meeting on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomed President Adama Barrow of The Gambia into his office.
The encounter highlighted The Gambia’s remarkable democratic progress and the success of its transitional justice program.
During their discussion, President Barrow provided an update on the three phases of The Gambia’s Truth, Reconciliation, and Reparations Commission (TRRC).

The initiative aims to deliver justice, reparations, and reconciliation for victims of past abuses. President Barrow emphasized the importance of this process in healing and rebuilding the nation.
Secretary-General Guterres expressed admiration for President Barrow’s leadership, praising the democratic gains made under his administration.
He assured President Barrow of the UN’s continued support for The Gambia’s sustainable development agenda. Encouraging the maintenance of peace in the region, Guterres stated, “Maintain it that way Mr President.”
President Barrow expressed his gratitude for the UN’s renewed peace-building support, which is crucial in delivering justice to victims. He reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating with regional bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union Commission (AUC), alongside the UN, to ensure the continued success of these processes.
