By Jonsaba Drammeh
In loving memory of Shakina Chinedu, a beacon of light whose passion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of Africa will forever inspire us all. Shakina’s journey from Britain to the Gambia in 2016 was not merely a geographical relocation; it was a profound testament to her deep-rooted love for the continent and its people.
As a legal practitioner for over three decades, Shakina’s impact on Africa’s legal landscape was immeasurable. Her work with the esteemed law firm Nubian and her leadership in various campaigns for fast-track citizenship exemplified her relentless pursuit of justice and equality. Shakina’s voice echoed across boardrooms and courtrooms alike, advocating tirelessly for the rights of Africans at home and abroad.
Shakina’s dedication extended beyond legal advocacy; she was a catalyst for change in every sphere she touched. Her collaborations with the UK government, police, and higher education institutions paved the way for policy reforms and institutional changes that ensured African and Caribbean residents in the UK had equitable access to essential services.
In 2016, Shakina embarked on a new chapter of her journey, relocating to Africa with a fervent desire to see the continent thrive. Her vision of self-sufficiency and empowerment resonated deeply with the diaspora, inspiring a wave of solidarity and action. Shakina’s tireless efforts to harness the potential of the diaspora and mobilize resources for Africa’s development were unparalleled.
In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Shakina was honored with the prestigious Daylight Africa Award in 2023, a testament to her enduring legacy of service and advocacy. Though her life was tragically cut short, Shakina’s spirit lives on in the countless lives she touched and the indelible mark she left on Africa’s journey towards prosperity and unity.
Today, as we mourn the loss of a remarkable woman, let us also celebrate her life and legacy. Let us honor Shakina’s memory by continuing her work, by standing up for justice, by championing equality, and by striving to build a brighter future for Africa and all its people. Shakina may no longer walk among us, but her spirit will forever guide us on the path towards a more just, equitable, and prosperous Africa.
May her soul continue to rest on…..
