Nigeria: FG declares Tuesday, Wednesday public holidays for Eid-el-Fitr celebration
In a move aimed at fostering religious harmony and celebration among Nigeria’s Muslim population, the Federal Government has officially declared Tuesday, 9th, and Wednesday, 10th April 2024 as public holidays to mark the forthcoming Eid-el-Fitr festival.
The announcement was made by Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government in the capital city of Abuja.
This decision comes following the successful completion of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting, which is observed by Muslims worldwide. In a congratulatory message issued by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Aishetu Gogo-Ndayako, Minister Tunji-Ojo extended warm felicitations to the Muslim Ummah on the occasion of Eid-el-Fitr.
Encouraging the community to embrace the core values of Islam, the minister emphasized the importance of kindness, love, tolerance, peace, good neighborliness, and compassion as exemplified by Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him).
He also urged all Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation, to uphold the spirit of unity, which he believes is crucial for fostering peace and national cohesion.
In his Eid-el-Fitr message, Minister Tunji-Ojo expressed heartfelt wishes for a joyous celebration and invoked blessings of peace and prosperity upon the Muslim Ummah and the entire nation. His message underscored the significance of this period as a time of reflection and communal bonding.
The declaration of these public holidays underscores the government’s commitment to respecting and celebrating religious diversity while promoting values of unity and tolerance across the nation. It is anticipated that this occasion will be marked with various festivities and prayers across Nigeria, as families and communities come together in the spirit of Eid.
