ECOWAS takes center stage at African Union meeting in Accra to foster regional integration, sustainable development

The 6th Biennial Coordination Meeting of the African Union with Regional Economic Communities (CER) and Regional Mechanisms witnessed a strong presence of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Sunday, July 21, 2024.

The summit, inaugurated by His Excellency Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, President of the Arab Republic of Mauritania and current President of the African Union, brought together African leaders, including His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana, and His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and President of the ECOWAS Conference of Heads of State and Government.

The presence of ECOWAS at the summit was marked by the participation of President Tinubu, who also serves as the Chairman of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS. The delegation was accompanied by His Excellency Moussa Faki, President of the African Union, His Excellency Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, Chairman of the ECOWAS Commission, Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, and other members of the ECOWAS Committee.

The primary objective of the African Union meeting was to assess the progress of regional integration and explore strategies to promote peace, security, good governance, and the achievement of sustainable development goals across the African continent. The presence of ECOWAS, as a key regional economic community, underscored its commitment to fostering collaboration and collective efforts towards these shared goals.

The meeting provided a platform for African leaders to exchange ideas, share best practices, and strengthen regional cooperation in various sectors. Discussions revolved around enhancing trade and economic integration, advancing infrastructure development, and addressing common challenges such as climate change, terrorism, and migration.

President Tinubu’s presence at the summit highlighted the leadership role of ECOWAS in driving regional integration and peace-building initiatives. As President of the ECOWAS Conference of Heads of State and Government, his participation further emphasized the commitment of ECOWAS to the collective aspirations of the African Union.

The outcome of the meeting will contribute to shaping regional policies and strategies aimed at promoting sustainable development, peace, and stability in Africa.
