Kenya organization introduces rural communities to the metaverse through virtual reality
The Africa VR Campus and Center, based in Kenya, is on a mission to immerse remote communities in the transformative world of the metaverse. Founded by Paul Simon Waiyaki Wa Hinga, a former teacher seeking innovative ways to engage students, the organization recently introduced virtual reality (VR) technology to youngsters in a community in Kiambu, just north of Nairobi.
Waiyaki emphasizes the importance of social and economic empowerment, stating, “They too have stories to tell in the metaverse… bringing the sustainable development goals closer to them using the power of Virtual Reality.” Recognizing a significant gap in VR technology knowledge across Kenyan villages, he began touring and providing hands-on training sessions to locals.
Since its inception in 2019, Africa VR Campus claims to be the first organization in Africa to host weekly metaverse events. During a recent three-day training session at a village hall in Kiambu, young residents experienced VR headsets for the first time. Virginia, a new participant, exclaimed, “I can actually see space and all the stars!” She expressed excitement about the opportunities that VR technology could bring, including the potential to earn a living while experiencing the world from Africa.
Margeret Wanjiru, a program participant since 2021, shared her pride in teaching others about VR technology. “I feel it has benefitted me a lot since we have even gone to universities to teach students how to use it. I feel special and I feel like I am an important girl,” she said.
Brian Afande, founder and CEO of Blackrhino VR, commended Waiyaki’s initiative as a promising start but emphasized the need for homegrown innovation. “Training individuals on how they can create content, not just consume it, is crucial. This technology can change our lives in so many ways,” he stated.
Despite challenges like limited infrastructure, skepticism, and internet coverage, Africa VR Campus remains dedicated to empowering young people in rural areas. As Kenya continues to be recognized as a leading tech hub in Africa, the organization’s efforts signal a bright future for local communities in embracing digital innovation and the metaverse.
